Charles Belle, born April 15, 1956 in Rochejean, is a French artist who continues to live and work in France. As an art student at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Besançon, he was one of only two students to pursue figurative painting, a course then out of fashion and distinctly discouraged by peers and professors alike. He has stuck to his course with conviction, and today his paintings stand as ample vindication of his youthful independence.

Belle’s paintings, intimate portraits of flowers, demonstrate that the long and distinguished tradition of French still life painting clearly retains its vitality even in our present age. And yet, his passionately expressive paintings, with their saturated colors, vigorous brushwork, and large scale, seem to transcend the barriers of such simple categorization. Their complex message, derived from nature, is revealed, through the art of painting, in the slow rhythm of nature itself. They have that rare ability to speak in a simple and powerful language understood by all, and they are indeed ablaze with life.

Charles Belle has been represented by Denise Cadé Gallery, New York, since 1993, and his work has been exhibited widely in France and abroad. His paintings are included in numerous public collections, among them the following:
