Gérard Titus-Carmel

Gérard Titus-Carmel, born in Paris in 1942, is one of the leading French artists of his generation. In 1969, he committed himself exclusively to drawing for its purity and discipline, and even since his return to painting in the 1980s, drawing has remained central to his work. In his early years, he sought out the Surrealist poets André Breton and Louis Aragon, and shares with them the understanding of the bond between poetry and painting. Indeed, Titus-Carmel himself is renowned as a poet as well as a painter, and is equally concerned with the written word and the painted image.

In the course of his pursuits, Titus-Carmel has received France’s highest honors in the arts: he is an Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Merite. He is also an associate member of the Academie Royale des Sciences, des Lettres, et des Beaux Arts of Belgium. He has been the subject of dozens of solo exhibitions around the world, and his work is found in numerous public collections.
